Opportunities to Create Graphs and Tables with First Graders

This is my first attempt to try to use technology in my lesson plan.  I found it to be very interesting and a little hard.  Once I learned how to create a power point lesson, I found it to be quite exciting.  I would use this type of strategy in my classroom for my students when there is no Direct Instruction (D. I.).  I can visualize my students really getting into the graphing part and would probably have so much to say.  This would increase their vocabulary as well.  First graders don’t have as much vocabulary as a fifth grader, but with more discussions and debates on their tables and graphs, they could excel tremendously.  By using this activity, students utilize their language skills that address in the TESOL standards (1997), which is to be able to demonstrate understanding of language as a system and demonstrate a high level of competence in helping TESOL students and acquire and use English in listening, speaking, reading and writing for social and academic purposes.

This lesson plan will help my students a great deal.  The majority of my students are English Language Learners.  This lesson would be very beneficial to all my students because it creates lots of opportunities for them to be comfortable in speaking even though it may not be too comprehensible at first.

I foresee that this kind of lesson that incorporates technology is not only beneficial to my classroom, but I think that it is appropriate to use in all classrooms in the Guam Public School System which has a large population of English Language Learners.

Although this kind of lesson could be beneficial to both teachers and students, I foresee challenges from the teachers’ end.  Students are always eager to learn new and challenging things in school but it would be up to the teacher to administer technology to them.  Many teachers, especially the veterans, don’t like change, and are not willing to accept new strategies and methods in their teaching.  They’re content where they’re at.

I really enjoyed this assignment and I will definitely put it in affect when the D. I. program is history.
